San Yu went to Paris to study and dedicated his life to painting. His works are an exquisite example of Eastern and Western artistic elements blended together in a way that gave voice to the humanist zeitgeist of the times, his simple and flowing painting style earning him the title “The Matisse of the East.”
In this work we see three zebras running, almost leaping forward with each step, in a vast empty space made up of blue, red and green. The artist creates tension through his skillful combination of colors, in a way that imbues the open space with a primitive energy, while also creating a sense of loneliness that makes the viewer reflect on the meaning of the piece.
